Everyday Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

Signs

1.  Persistent Headaches

Occasional headaches are normal, but frequent or worsening ones may point to high blood pressure, neurological issues, or in rare cases, something more serious. Seek urgent care if you experience a sudden “worst headache of your life,” headaches with fever and stiff neck, or pain with vision changes, weakness, or confusion.

  • Sudden severe “thunderbolt” headache — seek emergency care immediately
  • Headaches with nausea, light sensitivity, or visual disturbances
  • Recurring headaches that wake you from sleep

2.  Unexplained Fatigue

Feeling drained despite adequate sleep is not normal. Persistent fatigue lasting more than two weeks can signal anaemia, thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, or even heart disease. Don’t write it off as “just stress” — simple blood tests can usually identify the cause quickly.

  • Fatigue unrelieved by rest, lasting 2+ weeks
  • Exhaustion paired with dizziness, pale skin, or shortness of breath
  • Sudden drop in energy with no lifestyle change

3.  Chest Pain

Chest pain should never be ignored. While it can stem from acid reflux or muscle strain, it may also be a sign of a heart attack or pulmonary embolism. Note that in women, heart attacks often present without classic chest pressure — instead appearing as jaw pain, back pain, or unusual fatigue.

  • Pressure, squeezing, or tightness in the chest
  • Pain radiating to the arm, jaw, neck, or back
  • Chest discomfort with sweating, nausea, or breathlessness — call emergency services

4.  Frequent Stomach Issues

Recurring digestive problems are more than just an inconvenience — they can indicate IBS, GERD, inflammatory bowel disease, or in some cases, colorectal cancer. Early investigation leads to better outcomes, so don’t delay a conversation with your doctor.

  • Blood in stool or persistent dark/tarry stools
  • Chronic bloating, cramping, or alternating constipation and diarrhoea
  • Difficulty swallowing or heartburn unresponsive to medication

5.  Sudden Weight Changes

Losing or gaining more than 5% of your body weight within 6–12 months without trying is a meaningful medical signal. Unexplained weight loss can indicate thyroid problems, diabetes, or cancer, while unexplained gain may point to hormonal imbalances, heart failure, or kidney disease.

  • Unintentional weight loss with fatigue or night sweats
  • Rapid weight gain with swelling in legs or ankles
  • Any significant unexplained weight change alongside other new symptoms
